If you’re considering moving to the Charleston, SC area or the nearby Town of Mount Pleasant, one neighborhood you may hear about is the Old Village. Also known as Mount Pleasant Historic District or Old Village Historic District, it is – as the name suggests – old, established in 1803, with the oldest surviving building dating back to 1750s.
Here’s what to know about the Old Village in Mt. Pleasant.
The Old Village District is situated on Charleston Harbor, south of Coleman Blvd. and close to Shem Creek. This puts it a short drive over the bridge to the Charleston peninsula and to the beach on Sullivan’s Island.
From the historically significant Hibben House, the average drive times in good traffic are:
The Old Village or Mt. Pleasant Historic District has many of the special features that draw people to the Lowcountry: the quintessentially Southern moss-draped live oaks, waterfront living, and beautiful architecture. Living in the Old Village means taking advantage of all Mt. Pleasant has to offer (read more on that here) while enjoying what makes the Old Village unique within Mt. Pleasant.
Amenities in the neighborhood include the Miriam Brown Community Center, with an activity building, playground, and outdoor basketball court; the small and charming James Edwards Park; and the events location Alhambra Hall with its nearby walking trails and adjoining open park featuring picnic tables and a playground.
The neighborhood also has a number of restaurants, shops, and hotels/inns. Some notable places include the Old Village Post House, which was built in 1896 and is now an inn and restaurant, and Pitt Street Pharmacy, a compounding pharmacy and old-timey soda fountain. Within walking distance, residents can enjoy also enjoy the shops and restaurants on Coleman Boulevard, the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market, and Shem Creek, where one can charter a boat, rent a kayak, or watch the sunset from one of the popular creek-side restaurants.
Considering its excellent location in Mt. Pleasant and the fact that it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 due to its historical significance, it should be no surprise that the homes in the Old Village District are on the expensive side.
The most expensive properties are those that are old and historically significant as well as those right on the water. Without doubt, the Old Village has some of the most beautiful waterfront homes in the greater Charleston area. These multi-million-dollar mansions lining the Charleston Harbor are ideal for water lovers, as they each have their own dock, not to mention spectacular views! Further in from the waterfront, you can find more affordable homes in the Old Village in a large variety of sizes and styles on charming tree-lined streets.
The large variety of architectural styles you see in the Old Village is a reflection of how old the area is and how tastes have changed over time. Here you can find a classic Lowcountry-style home from the 1800s, an early 1900s built in the colonial style, a 1950s-era ranch-style house, a home built in the early 2000s that looks like a 19th-century Charleston single, and much more. Lowcountry architectural features like elevated homes, split staircases, and double porches are also common here. Despite the variety of styles, there’s a pleasing uniformity to the look of the homes in the Old Village that shows respect for the historic value of the neighborhood.
The Town of Mt. Pleasant is one of the fastest growing municipalities in the state, and new development has transformed the city in the past two decades, especially North Mt. Pleasant. But as an established, historic district, the Old Village remains what it has been for over two centuries – a lovely, quiet neighborhood full of Charleston charm that’s a great place to live, raise a family, or to retire to.
