Are you moving to the Charleston, SC area? If so, one neighborhood you might hear about as you’re looking for homes is I’On. This beautiful and upscale planned community, located in Mt. Pleasant not far from the Charleston peninsula, is an exceptional neighborhood and a wonderful place to live.
I’On is in a fantastic location in Mount Pleasant just off Hwy. 17 at Shelmore Blvd. It is literally minutes over the Ravenel Bridge to I-26 and the Charleston peninsula and a short drive up Hwy. 17 to catch I-526.
From the I’On Club, the average drive times in good traffic are:
Even though I’On is located in Mt. Pleasant, one of the fastest growing places in the country, it’s a gracious and tranquil neighborhood that feels set apart from the hustle and bustle. Living in I’On means you get to take advantage of all that Mt. Pleasant has to offer, including great shopping, restaurants, schools, and attractions. (Check out our blog on Mt. Pleasant for more.) There are also plenty of amenities and things to do located right within the I’On community.
Entering I’On from Shelmore Blvd., you’ll find a number of restaurants, small businesses, and boutiques. The I’On Club, just off Mathis Ferry Road, is open for membership to residents of I’On and nonresidents alike and offers swimming, tennis, fitness facilities, and food. I’On is also home to two popular events and wedding venues: the I’On Chapel (formerly the I’On Meeting House) on Shelmore Blvd. near Mathis Ferry Road and the Creek Club, located further into the community on Hobcaw Creek.
As a planned community, which began development in 1995, I’On was developed with lifestyle in mind. There are several open green spaces, sidewalks, walking trails, and community docks. Molasses Creek runs through I’On, and it backs up to Hobcaw Creek to the north. Small man-made lakes provide waterfront living for many residents. Events for the community such as potluck dinners and special holiday gatherings are scheduled throughout the year.
Take a stroll or drive through I’On and you’ll be struck by the harmony of the homes there. Though each one is different, they all adhere to the same architectural and construction standards, so you’ll see many similar elements across homes. Classic Lowcountry architecture features like multi-story porches, side porches, split staircases, elevated homes, and light paint colors are common.
Lots are typically on the smaller side, so you won’t find large yards, but the public green spaces make up for that. Some homes have a separate carriage house that can be rented out for additional income, serve as a mother-in-law suite, or simply used as additional living space. You will find larger houses on the water as well as some smaller, cottage-style homes in I’On closer to the entrance by Mathis Ferry Road.
I’On is one of Mt. Pleasant’s most exclusive neighborhoods, and the prices reflect that. Homes in I’On start in the high 6 figures and go into the millions.
The location is excellent, being so close to downtown Charleston, but that’s just the start. The beauty of the individual homes, the harmony of the architectural style, the thoughtful layout of the development as a whole, and the neighborly feel are just a few of the things that make I’On special. It’s a real neighborhood that fosters friendships and celebrates community.
